RESFLOR - ONE DOSE TREATMENT FOR BRD
By Russ Schnepper DVM
Resflor is Intervet Schering-Plough’s new one dose subcutaneous treatment for Bovine Respiratory Disease. A single dose of 6 ml/100 pounds body weight, injected under the skin in the neck, has proven to be effective in treating calves and cattle for pneumonia type problems. Resflor is a new formulation of Nuflor and Banamine. The concentration of both the Nuflor and Banamine are the therapeutic doses of both in a 6 ml/100 pounds injection. The formulation has a new carrier that is less irritating and the two products mix well. DO NOT TRY MIXING NUFLOR AND BANAMINE IN THE SAME SYRINGE. It will turn to jelly and you will not be able to get it through a needle.
Resflor has claims for the economically important respiratory pathogens Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilius somni. The Banamine is a Non- Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Agent. It reduces fever that can cause depression and appetite loss. It controls bacterial growth that leads to the release of bacterial toxins which cause lung damage.
Schering has videos showing a very droopy calf with respiratory problems that is down. Within a few hours of a Resflor injection the calf shows evidence of feeling better and becoming more alert. Six hours following the injection of Resflor the calf is looking good and gets up. It gets a drink of water and then goes to the feed bunk, and starts eating. The one subcutaneous dose that is effective saves lots of labor running the calves back through the chute for a follow up treatment. Avoiding the stress relating to retreating calves is very significant.
Comparisons between effectiveness of Resflor, Baytril, and Draxxin are statistically insignificant. Lung lesions appear to be reduced with the Resflor. Fever is reduced faster with the Resflor. Cattle will usually resume eating faster after the Resflor treatment.
Intervet Schering-Plough’s Nuflor Gold is reformulated Nuflor. The new base is less irritating at the injection site and the drug goes to work faster than the regular Nuflor. Cattle show noticeable improvement within six hours of injection of the Nuflor Gold. The dosage is six ml/100 pounds of body weight. One dose is usually adequate.
Nuflor products should be stored at room temperature, because it thickens and is difficult to get the liquid through the syringe at refrigerator temperatures. If Nuflor is thickened by cold temperatures it is feasible to warm the product by immersing in a container of warm water.
The Nuflor products have different withdrawal times. Be sure to check the labels. Resflor withdrawal is 38 days after the injection. Nuflor Gold withdrawal is 44 days.
Nuflor withdrawal is 38 days. Banamine injected IV has a 4 day withdrawal.
