INTRANASAL 5 WAY PLUS PASTEURELLA VACCINE

By: Russ Schnepper, D.V.M.

Intervet Schering-Plough now has an intranasal vaccine, ONSET 5 PMH IN, a modified live IBR, PI3,BVD Types I & II, BRSV, Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida. ONSET IN comes in the same combinations as Vista 5 SQ (the modified live virus vaccines) or Vista Once SQ (the modified live virus vaccine with attenuated Pasteurella and Mannheimia vaccines).

There are many advantages to the intranasal vaccines. Intervet Schering-Plough has done the research and proven the intranasal vaccine works in the presence of colostral antibodies. It is not interfered with by high cortisol levels, and produces immunity in the newborn calf. Anaphylactic reactions are not a problem. The vaccine is smooth. It does not cause depressed appetites. We just do not see the down side of modified live vaccines by using the intranasal approach. The research was done showing protection by challenging the calf with the live organisms. The calf does not develop a titer but has cell mediated immunity and is protected from disease.

Administering the vaccine to baby calves is easy. Intervet did the trials, applying the vaccine many ways; dripping it into the nose, aerosolizing, spraying in one nostril or two nostrils, etc. All methods were effective. So giving 2 ml into one nostril is the preferred method. Most syringes operate better giving one 2 ml dose than two 1 ml doses. Larger cattle are more challenging, as you will have to catch them to give the intranasal vaccine. The increased immunity and less downer effects, as well as few anaphylactic reactions makes handling the cattle worth while. Pasteurella vaccine in the nose does not cause a so called “stacking” effect with Gram negative vaccines.

ONSET IN has the same antigens as Vista. ONSET IN has a new “BluShadow Sterile Diluent”. It will leave a little blue color in the nostril, showing you which calves have been vaccinated. The Vista products can be used the same as ONSET (the labels are different, but the vaccine is effective). Likewise if ONSET IN is injected, it is also effective and has no detrimental effect.

Intervet Schering-Plough has done the research on this vaccine and proves it safe and effective by challenging the vaccinated calves. The immunity produced by the intranasal vaccine does a good job of protecting the calf from the diseases.

Intranasal vaccines utilize the calf’s mucosal membranes to produce immunity. The respiratory and digestive systems are lined with mucosal membranes. The live vaccines have an effect on the mucosa that produces immunity. Killed bacterins have not demonstrated this ability. So don’t give the Lepto vaccine in the nose. I am not aware of any research work that shows effectiveness of killed vaccines intranasally. Please do not give any killed products in the nose.

IMMUNIZE THEM IN THE NOSE - IT WORKS!!!
