USE INSECTICIDES TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
By: Russ Schnepper, D. V. M.
Many cattle producers have been using pour on endectocides, such as Dectomax, at less than label directions. A feedlot Veterinarian supposedly saved his clients two million dollars in medication costs and looked like a hero. But once the cattle went to market and the close outs were completed, the reduced performance on the cattle cost the producers twenty million dollars. Now the Veterinarian is more infamous than famous. They were using the pour on at the lower rates as a lice treatment.
Schering has new data demonstrating "Boss" at the label dose of three milliliters per hundred pounds body weight will control lice with one dose. So you can control lice for as little as $0.06 per hundred pounds. Boss can be used on dairy cattle also.
Pouring cattle with Dectomax, is a good idea, just as the cattle go to pasture. Not only does it get the lice, but also the residual effect as a dewormer will kill the worms that are picked up from the pasture for a full month. If you want the worm killing effect to last for a month, do not pour the cattle until the day they go to pasture. Dectomax has a slaughter withdrawal of 45 days and can not be used on female dairy animals over 20 months of age.
Eprinex is cleared for use on dairy cattle. There is no milk withholding, nor slaughter withdrawal for Eprinex. This is a good procedure to do the day the cattle go to pasture. Also remember to vaccinate your cattle for Black Leg before they go to pasture.
The fly season will soon be upon us. Protect your young cattle with fly tags. A fly tag on a calf in a hutch will do a good job of keeping flies out of the hutch. We have tags that are approved for use on milk cows.
Fly sprays are expensive and not as effective as we would like. Spraying cows in the barn will not kill the flies, as most of the flies do not come into the barn. A better and more cost effective fly control is to pour the cows with Ultra Boss every three weeks.
We have a new "QuickBayt" for fly control in and around livestock facilities. QuickBayt is a fast acting, ready-to-use dry scatter bait with 0.5% imidacloprid and a unique mixture of two attractants. QuickBayt works in less than sixty seconds and lasts for four weeks. It controls those troublesome hard-to-kill flies resistant to organophosphates and carbamates. Imidacloprid, the active ingredient in QuickBayt, is an exciting new development from Bayer with fast knockdown and no resistance problems. In studies, it killed flies twice as fast as methomyl. QuickBayt is the first fly bait to use this new class of active ingredients. QuickBayt can be painted on surfaces. Mix 1.5 ounces of bait with 1 ounce of warm water and stir thoroughly. Let stand for 15 minutes until a paste consistency suitable for painting has formed. Apply the paste with a brush to surfaces where flies rest. QuickBayt contains a bittering agent to help prevent accidental ingestion by children, animals and pets.
